THE 6th MESS ISSUE
Wednesday, August 13, 2008
The Opening of the 6th mess(between 9th and 10th blocks) inside the campus premises has become a big problem not only with respect to the administration and the workers union but also with the students of our college.
With a large amount of increase in the number of students this academic year, there is a dire need for opening a new mess in the campus for accommodating all students into the messes.
Current situation:
The five messes in the campus are run by the mess workers(104 workers in total) of which 27 workers are permanent workers. The remaining 77 workers are temporary.
Director's View:
The low quality of food in the messes currently being run by the mess workers, has prompted the director to call for a private enterprise to run the 6th mess whose contract has to be renewed annually. The renewal of the contract depends upon the feedback by the students with respect to cost or quality or both. This leverage in the hands of the administration will ensure good quality of food throughout the year.
Mess Workers' view:
The mess workers say that since they have been working here from the past 40 years, their job must be made permanent. They say that they "will resort to drastic measures if some outsider comes into the campus".
They have the following demands:
-->The remaining 77 members should also be made permanent.
-->The 6th mess also should be run by the mess workers.
The Catch:
--> The college is allowed to have 300 permanent employees and we already have 436 permanent employees in the campus.
--> More recruitment of mess workers is required to run the 6th mess. And if recruited, the probability that they will demand for making the new recruits' job permanent in the coming years is no less than one.
-->They might also demand for the new mess that is under construction near the 1000 seater block and come up with similar demands again.
The students have already outnumbered the capacity of the messes and the PG 2nd year students were forbidden from the campus messes.
With the issue remained unsettled, the CCU-Restaurant was opened at the dining hall of Centre of Value Education(Formerly the Punnami Restaurant).
The Catch:
-->The CCU-Restaurant is too far to go to 3 times a day.
-->The daily average is Rs.45, compared to Rs.30 in the campus messes.
